TRACK EXPRESS HISTORY
In 1982, a couple of best friends, Carlos Alexander and Darryl Hamilton, decided to begin a summer youth track and field program and named their team the “Jaguars.” Seven years later, the Jaguars joined the Kettering-Largo-Mitchellville (KLM) Boys and Girls Club. In 1995, the organization later became Track Express Track Club, Inc. so that high school athletes could also participate in the summer track and field competitions. That same year Coach Darryl began coaching at Largo High School and wanted to establish the team as one of the most dominating schools in the area. With this challenge before him, Coach Darryl turned the summer program over to Avon Meacham. The team has since participated and achieved high awards in local and national championships.
About ten years later, Coach Darryl met his challenge by establishing the Largo Lions as one of the best high school track teams in Prince Georges County. The Largo Lions triumphed and won four State Championships. Previously, Coach Darryl also guided Bladensburg High School to four State Championships and received 8 All Met and All County Coach of the Year Award during that period. His tenure includes Bladensburg High School (1986-1993), Northwestern High School (1993-1994) and Largo High School (1995-present). Coach Darryl has sent a numerous athletes to college with scholarships during his years of high school coaching and continues to do so today.
In 2000, the Club instituted an award to be presented to the Bantam Boy and Bantam Girl Athlete of the Year, in honor of the late Carlos Alexander.
In 2008, the team was honored by having Coach Anthony Dozier be nominated as the Head Coach of Track Express Track Club, Inc. Coach Anthony is committed to the development of the youth of our community. He and his coaching staff not only provide athletic training for athletes between the ages of 6 and 18 years, but offer opportunities for the athletes to learn lessons of discipline, leadership, sportsmanship, responsibility and character.
